C h r o n o l o g y

1929 - Nicolas Vlavianos is born on February 7th, in Athens, Greece.

1948 - Enters Law School at the University of Athens.

1955 - After completing military service he abandons his law studies to dedicate his time to painting.

1956 - Lives in Paris till 1961. Begins his apprenticeship in sculpture at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, with the sculptor Zadkine. Produces his first works in welded iron at Lazslò Szabo’s Académie du Feu.
Goes on study trips to Belgium, Holland, Italy, the UK and Germany.

1958 - Takes part in his first collective-work exhibition in the 13ème Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville in Paris.
Initiates a new phase using the theme Wings/Flight.

1959 - Takes part in the 14ème Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville in Paris and in the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, at the Musée Rodin, in Paris.

1960 - Takes part in the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, at the Musée Rodin, in Paris.

1961 - Holds his first solo exhibition at the Institut Français d’Athènes, with a catalogue written by Efi Ferentinou.
Exhibits sculptures of closed and compact construction, in welded iron inspired by the ancient.
Receives an award from the Greek Ministry of Education during the VI Pan-Helenic Exhibit, in Athens.
Takes part in the XVII Salon de Mai, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville in Paris and in the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, at the Musée Rodin, in Paris.
Travels to Brazil, as part of a delegation of Greek artists in the VI São Paulo International Biennial.
Settles down in São Paulo.

1962 - Rents his first studio in São Paulo, at Espártaco Street, in the district of Lapa.
Opens his first solo exhibition in Brazil presented by Aracy Amaral, at the Galeria São Luiz, in São Paulo. He presents dynamically composed sculptures, integrating nails and mechanical parts into masses of welded iron.

1963 - Takes part in the VII São Paulo International Biennial.
Designs and undertakes the making of weapons for the stage play Caesar and Cleopatra, directed by Ziembinski and starred by Cacilda Becker.
In collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC-USP) he programmes and sets up several of his own exhibitions.

1964 - Meets the Argentinian painter Teresa Nazar. Moves to a studio in Pires de Oliveira Street, in the district of Chácara Santo Antônio. Exhibits at the Seta Gallery, in São Paulo.
Presents relief and small dimension sculptures in iron, brass, wood and industrial waste using an anthropomorphic theme. The use of welding appears as a manner of construction and expression.

1965 - Marries Teresa Nazar and moves to Francisco Dias Velho Street in the São Paulo district of Brooklin, where he lives and works. Exhibits at the Astréia Gallery, in São Paulo. Presents small dimension sculptures with an anthropomorphic theme and of contained expressionism, which he names "Personages". Diversifies his materials. Besides iron and brass, he uses aluminum, copper and stainless steel, as well as industrial residue. He employs compression to model steel plates.
Is awarded the following prizes: 2nd Prize for Sculpture by the 1st Esso Salon for Young Artists, at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro; 1st Prize for Sculpture by the XX Fine Arts Municipal Salon, at the Belo Horizonte City Council Museum of Art; the Acquisition Award by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the VIII São Paulo International Biennial.

1966 - Sets up a solo exhibition at MAM in Rio de Janeiro, presented by Mário Pedrosa. Exhibits figures of ancient inspiration, comprised by sections of welded iron unified by colour and called "Untamed".
Is invited to participate, with an exclusive room, at the I Visual Arts National Biennial, in Salvador, where he receives a Special Award.

1967 - Takes part in the IX São Paulo International Biennial and the IV Federal District Modern Art Salon, in Brasília (where he receives the Acquisition Award).
Takes up the theme Wings/Flight again with "Astronauts" and "Birds".
His daughter Myrine Evangelia is born.
Works with the Rhodia Fashion Collection, creating and producing designs and clothes, amongst other activities.

1968 - Exhibits at the Petite Galerie, Rio de Janeiro, presenting small dimension figures in iron, brass and stainless steel from the "Astronauts" series.
His son Gabriel Charilaos is born.

1969 - Starts his teaching career at Visual Arts School of Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP), where he has been giving classes in Three-Dimensional Expression.

1971 - Sets up a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Brazilian Art (MAB) of FAAP, in São Paulo, where he introduces sculptures in welded aluminum and once again, takes up the "Astronauts" series. Does a multiple series with the Wings theme, in asbestos cement, for the Eternit company, numbered I to V and 1 to 50. From this date on, he designs and produces multiple series and utility objects. The majority of his sculptures are created in sheets of stainless steel moulded in pressured relief achieved by stamping.

1972 - Exhibits at the Astréia Gallery, in São Paulo. Begins the "Plants" series. Goes on to emphasize the shining surfaces of his work by intensifying their brillance. Takes part in the V Panorama of Brazilian Art / Sculpture, at MAM, São Paulo, and, together with his students from FAAP, at the V Young Contemporary Art Exhibition, at MAC-USP, São Paulo.

1973 - Takes part in the project Live Space Construhab, co-ordinated by Maria Bonomi, and undertakes a multiple series of "Astronautas", in stainless steel numbered from I to X and from 1 to 90 for Construhab.
Produces the trophy The Villa-Lobos Award, offered by The Paulista Association of Art Critics (APCA).

1974 - Exhibits at the Multipla Gallery, in São Paulo (interviewed by Mário Chamie for the catalogue). Is awarded the State Council Award for Culture at the V Paulista Contemporary Art Salon, at the São Paulo Biennial Pavilion, and the APCA Award for the Visual Arts.

1975 - Is appointed Commissary for the XIII São Paulo International Biennial by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Science. Takes part in the III Small Sculpture International Biennial, in Budapest, at the invitation of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and receives the First Prize with the work Plant.
Takes part in the VII Panorama of Current Brazilian Art / Sculpture, at MAM, São Paulo. Creates the APCA Award, with a numbered edition from 1 to 5.

1976 - Exhibits at the Multipla Gallery, in São Paulo, and travels to Italy for a solo exhibition in the Brazilian Embassy Gallery in Rome.

1977 - Sets up a solo exhibition at MAC-USP, São Paulo.
Takes part in the exhibition Grafica e Scultura Brasiliana, at the Centro Rizzoli, in Milan. Goes to Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, at the invitation of the Municipal Council to take part in the I National Meeting of Sculptors.

1978 - Exhibits at the Multipla Gallery, in São Paulo, with a catalogue presented by Walter Zanini. Takes part in the exhibition The Object in Art: Brazil in the Sixties, at MAB, São Paulo.
Produces the awards for the Itaú International Tennis Tournament, until 1982.

1979 - Is decorated with the Mário de Andrade Medal by the State Government of São Paulo. Undertakes a sculpture for the Gessy-Lever company, together with an edition of multiple series numbered from 1 to 65.
Produces a multiple series in stainless steel of the series "Plants", for the Sculpture Club, at the Skultura Gallery, edition numbered from 1 to 150.
Becomes an Art Council member of the Santa Marcelina Higher Education Art School.

1980 - Exhibits at Skultura Gallery, in São Paulo, and at Clementina Duarte Gallery, in Recife. Takes part in: A Panorama of 20th Century Brazilian Sculpture, organized by São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) at SESC Brasílio Machado Neto, São Paulo; Ochenta Años de Arte Brasileño, Buenos Aires and Lima.
Appointed by the State of São Paulo Secretariat for Culture, he becomes a full member of the Supervising Council for the State Art Gallery of São Paulo, until 1982.

1981 - Exhibits at the Guignard Gallery, in Porto Alegre.
Takes part in the exhibition Nine Sculptors from Brazil, with José Neistein as the curator, in the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute Art Gallery, in Washington, DC. Wins the Acquisition Award of the Caixa Econômica Federal Bank for the Panorama of Current Brazilian Art / Sculpture, at MAM, in São Paulo, with the work Structure III. Is appointed by the São Paulo Secretariat of Sports and Tourism, jury member for the Monument to Padre Anchieta to be built in Pico do Jaraguá, São Paulo. Produces three sculptures in stainless steel for American Express.

1982 - Takes part in the exhibition A Century of Brazilian Sculpture, at MASP, São Paulo.
Produces the trophy for the Best All Time Racing Driver, awarded by the Quatro Rodas magazine to Juan Manuel Fangio. Becomes a member of the MAM Arts Council in São Paulo. Takes part of the selection and awarding jury at the III Rug-Making Triennial, sponsored by MAM.
Goes to New York for a solo exhibition at the Camillos Kouros Gallery.
Moves the whole family to a new home, at Granja Vianna district, in the outskirts of São Paulo, where he works in a specially built studio.

1983 - Exhibits at the Singular Gallery, in Porto Alegre.

1984 - Goes to New York for a solo exhibition at the Camillos Kouros Gallery with a catalogue presented by Joan Marter, where he shows works from the "Gear" series.
Takes part in the exhibition Tradition and Disruption, organized by the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, and A Collection of Sculptures at MAB, São Paulo. Produces a multiple series for the Sculpture Club at the Skultura Gallery, numbered from I to XXV and from 1 to 250.

1985 - Exhibits at the Skultura Gallery, in São Paulo, with a catalogue presented by Olívio Tavares de Araújo, where he shows works from the "Oratory" series.
Takes part in the following exhibitions: V Sculpture International Biennial, in Athens; Indoors for Outdoors, in the Kouros Sculpture Center, Connecticut, NY; Current Brazilian Art Stand Outs and Panorama of Current Brazilian Art, both at MAM in São Paulo.
The painter Carlos Takaoka makes a study of one of his sculptures in Study Project, organized by the State Art Gallery of São Paulo, and exhibits in the XVIII São Paulo Biennial.

1986 - Exhibits in the Aktuel Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, with a catalogue presented by Marc Berkowitz.

1987 - Takes part in the exhibition Art and New Technologies: Fiber Optics, MAC-USP, São Paulo.

1988 - Takes part in the Panorama of Current Brazilian Art, MAM, São Paulo, and in the exhibition Message to Mário Schenberg, Funarte, São Paulo.

1989 - Goes to New York for the solo exhibition Objets d’Art, at the Camillos Kouros Gallery.

1990 - Initiates the "Magic machines" series, combining stainless steel and brass to create sculptures related to the theme "everyday use objects".
Takes part in the exhibition Without Walls: Art Environmental Sculpture Exhibition, in the Kouros Sculpture Center, Ridgefield, Connecticut, NY (permanent exhibition).

1991 - Takes part in the II Ephemeral Sculpture International Exhibition, Fortaleza. Produces the trophy for the 1st Open Tennis Tournament CPM.

1992 - Goes to Miami to take part in the International Fair Art Miami’92. Is invited to take part in the Special Commission for the Competition Project for the Sculpture Allusive to the Missing Politicians, at the São Paulo City Council.
Takes part in the exhibition The Seduction of the Volumes: The Three-Dimensional of MAC, at MAC-USP, São Paulo.
Administers the course Sculptures in Plates of Iron for MAC-USP, in collaboration with SENAI Osasco, SP (São Paulo State), and is one of the invited and honoured artists at the Jundiaí Art Salon, SP.

1993 - Sets up the retrospective exhibition Vlavianos: 35 Years of Sculpture, at MASP, São Paulo, with a catalogue presented by Fábio Magalhães and Walter Zanini. Sets up a solo exhibition at the Cassiano Ricardo Cultural Foundation, São José dos Campos, SP, with a catalogue presented by Carlos Scarinci.
Produces the trophy RH Top Award for The Brazilian Sales and Marketing Leaders Association (ADVB).
Takes part in the exhibition A Sculptural Survey, at the Kouros Sculpture Center, Ridgefield, Connecticut, NY.

1994 - Takes part in the exhibition Brazil XX Century Biennial, at the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, and Art Contemplates Nature, at the Kouros Sculpture Center, Ridgefield, Connecticut, NY. Produces a special edition of a multiple series for Lloyds Bank, numbered from 1 to 500.

1995 - Goes to Miami to take part in the International Fair Art Miami’95. Executes a special edition of a multiple series for H. Stern, to commemorate the company’s 50 years.
Takes part in the exhibition Art in the Environment, at the Kouros Sculpture Center, Ridgefield, Connecticut, NY.

1996 - Gives post graduate courses in sculpture at the Higher Center for Professional Development (CENAP) at FAAP, until 1997. Produces a sculpture in bronze for the Sudameris Bank. Takes part in the exhibition Art and Urban Space, with Aracy Amaral as curator and organized by Athos Bulcão Foundation, Brasília, DF.

1997 - Creates a work for the Garden of Sculptures of the new State Archives of São Paulo, with the art critic Radha Abramo as curator.
Executes two ceramic panels for the Singapore Housing Project, at the invitation of the São Paulo Municipal Department of Housing.
Is invited to take part in the Managing Council of the International Sculpture Centre (ISC), the world-wide organization for professional sculptors, with headquarters in Washington, DC.
Goes to Washington, DC, for the opening of the exhibition Brazilian Sculpture from 1920 to 1990: Profile of an Identity, with Emanoel Araújo as curator, in the Cultural Centre of the Inter-American Bank for Development.
Goes to Rome, Florence and Venice accompanied by a group of students from FAAP. Goes to New York to take part in the Annual Board Meeting of the ISC.

1998 - Takes part in the Pier Walk’98 Maquette Exhibition in the Wood Street Gallery, Chicago.
As guest artist, takes part in the international exhibition Pier Walk’98 at Navy Pier in Chicago, where he presents the sculpture Brazilian nature.
Is one of the invited artists of the virtual exhibition 2nd Art Eletromedia, which releases the work of selected artists on electric panels throughout various capitals of the country.
Produces the trophy Max Awards for the XII Fenasoft, in São Paulo.
Takes part in the exhibition The Art of Sculpture in the Conjunto Nacional, in São Paulo, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Conjunto Nacional Building.
Sets up a solo exhibition with a multiple series and art objects at Multipla Gallery, São Paulo.

1999 - Invited by TV Cultura, executes two painted stainless steel panels for the Metrópolis television broadcast stage set.
Sets up a solo exhibition with a multiple series and art objects at Multipla Gallery, São Paulo.

2000 - Executes a bronze sculpture, 3 meters large, comissioned by the Tissot company, for the celebration of 500 years anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil.
Takes part in the exhibition Brazilian Sculpture at Luz, at Parque da Luz, State Art Gallery of São Paulo, with Emanoel Araújo and Agnaldo Farias as curators.

2001 - Sets up the exhibition Vlavianos, Sculptoric Praxis at the Museum of Brazilian Art of FAAP, São Paulo.
